On 3 December 2024, the Australian Government unveiled the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), a game-changing update to the skilled migration program. Designed to replace outdated and fragmented occupation lists, the CSOL offers a streamlined and unified framework tailored to meet the country’s evolving labour market demands.
The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) marks a major shift in Australia’s skilled migration framework. By consolidating 456 high-demand occupations, the CSOL simplifies the application process and ensures migration pathways align with workforce needs. The list, effective from 7 December 2024, is expected to boost Australia’s economic growth by attracting skilled professionals.
Visas Affected by the CSOL
Skills in Demand Visa
Effective 7 December 2024, the Skills in Demand Visa will replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Subclass 482 visa. The CSOL will determine eligibility for the Core Skills Stream of this new visa, providing more flexible options for temporary skilled workers.
Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)
The Direct Entry stream of the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) visa will also incorporate the CSOL, enabling employers to sponsor skilled professionals for permanent residency.
Key Industries and Occupations on the CSOL
The CSOL prioritises roles across several high-demand sectors:
- Healthcare: General Practitioners, Registered Nurses (Aged Care, Critical Care, Mental Health), Medical Diagnostic Radiographers, and Physiotherapists.
- Information Technology: Software Engineers, Data Scientists, Cybersecurity Specialists, and ICT Business Analysts.
- Construction and Engineering: Civil Engineers, Construction Managers, Electricians, and Plumbers.
- Education: Secondary School Teachers (Mathematics, Science, Special Education) and Early Childhood Educators.
- Agriculture: Agricultural Scientists, Veterinarians, and Livestock Farmers.
- Skilled Trades: Carpenters, Metal Fabricators, Automotive Electricians, and Chefs.
The government will release more details on the Skills in Demand Visa and the forthcoming National Innovation Visa on 7 December 2024.
This consolidated approach simplifies migration processes and ensures a better match between skilled migrants and critical workforce needs.
