Revenue Reprieve – Double Demerit Points

In an unusual move, the State Government has given drivers in New South Wales a one-off reprieve from double demerit points. David Elliot, the Police Minister announced the reprieve was to provide lockdown citizens a break, especially since travel around New South Wales was suspended.

Double demerit points were introduced in 1997 as part of an Easter road safety campaign in response to a significant increase in road fatalities. They are usually in place over the October long weekend. They apply to speeding, seat belts, motorcycle helmets and mobile phone offences.

The next round of double demerits take effect from 24 December 2021 to 3 January 2022. Don’t risk your licence. If you have received a fine, contact our Traffic Law team for a free initial consultation.
