Labour Day double demerits in NSW
As we celebrate Labour Day 7 October in ACT, NSW and SA, we remind all drivers that double demerits are in place across NSW from Friday 4 October 2024 through to Monday 7 October 2024. Double demerits apply to key traffic offences such as speeding, seat belts, motorcycle helmets, and mobile phone use. See the NSW rules on demerit points and mobile phone use.
Why this weekend matters
This long weekend could quickly turn sour for drivers not following the rules. For example, if you are caught using your mobile phone while driving, you could be hit with 10 demerit points during double demerits. Unrestricted drivers in NSW have a maximum of 13 points, so that single mistake could put your licence at real risk. Check how points work at NSW Government.
Background
Double demerit points were first introduced in 1997 as part of a road safety campaign and now apply on major long weekends. Offences include speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, illegal mobile phone use and motorcycle helmet breaches. If you are close to your limit, consider whether a good behaviour period could be available if you receive a notice of suspension.
