Watch Out: Double Demerits in Play On Labour Day Long Weekend

Table of Contents

As we celebrate Labour Day 7 October in ACT, NSW and SA, we remind all drivers that double demerits are in place across NSW from Friday 4 October 2024 through to Monday 7 October 2024. Double demerits apply to key traffic offences such as speeding, seat belts, motorcycle helmets, and mobile phone use.

This long weekend could quickly turn sour for drivers not following the rules. For example, if you’re caught using your mobile phone while driving, you could be hit with a hefty 10 demerit points—a significant blow when unrestricted drivers in NSW have a maximum of only 13 points. Already lost points? You might be looking at losing your licence.

Double demerit points were first introduced in 1997 as part of a road safety campaign in response to rising road fatalities, and they have since been extended to all long weekends.

Don’t let a careless mistake cost you your licence. If you’ve been caught, contact Jameson Law for expert traffic law advice and representation. We’re here to help keep you on the road.
