Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL): what changed and why it matters
On 3 December 2024 the Australian Government introduced the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), a unified list that streamlines skilled migration and aligns it with workforce needs. The list commenced on 7 December 2024 and consolidates 456 occupations into a single reference point for key visa programs. For a quick assessment of your options, speak with our Sydney immigration lawyers.
Visas affected by the CSOL
Skills in Demand Visa. From 7 December 2024, the Skills in Demand Visa replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) 482 visa for new applicants. The CSOL determines eligibility for the Core Skills stream of this visa. If you are considering work in Australia, start with our work visa guide or get tailored help via our contact page.
Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) – Direct Entry. Employers using the Direct Entry stream should check the CSOL when planning sponsorship. Our team assists businesses to map roles to CSOL occupations and prepare strong nomination evidence. See our skilled visa support for employers and candidates.
Priority sectors highlighted on the CSOL
The CSOL emphasises national priorities including health, information technology, construction and engineering, education, agriculture and key trades. If your occupation falls in these areas, you may have clearer pathways under the Skills in Demand Visa or ENS 186. Not sure where you fit?
